Stuff That Matters

This post is for people who work online all day, It becomes difficult for them to concentrate on stuff that matters because distractions for them are only ‘a new tab’away.
I don’t know how most people work but when I write a post for my blog I keep all my social media profiles, email account and reference links open in other tabs and as a result I get distracted many times hence I end up with either a incomplete write up or no write up at all.
I wasn’t worried about all this until last week when a friend of mine asked me how many hours do you work? This question proved to be a difficult one for me because i don’t really know how many hours i work. Though, I sit in front of computer for at-least 3 hours everyday but out of all that time, how many hours do i really work? I have no idea, because all my Internet activities (working, tweeting, replying emails, etc) are simultaneously happening.
It’s high time for me to get organised and you as well, If you also work the same way as i do.
I have got few points which I am going to raise in this post, which might help in getting better productivity at work and If you have something to add, Feel free to share in the comments,

1.  Do One Thing At A Time, Focus
The moment I come online, first thing i do is opening my favorite social Media website, which in my case is Quora and than i go through other social media profiles , check emails and finally i come to the business.
I guess everyone follows the exact same order and there is nothing wrong with that too but keep checking Tweets, Facebook and emails simultaneously while working hampers the efficiency a lot. If you don’t believe me read this,
Recently, A guy named Maneesh Sethi hired a girl from craigslist to slap him every-time he got on Facebook while working and this worked well for him, his productivity went from 35-40% to 98%.
Don’t keep checking what your friends are doing while working, your friends can wait but work can’t.
2.  Set A Time Limit
I never really cared how much time it takes for me to write a post, may be because i am writing for my own blog but this is wrong and should not happen. You must know how much work you can do in a given amount of time because there’s a beautiful quote which goes like this, ”Time is Money”. So, Use Your Time Wisely.
Here’s an example,a simple analogy,
It is always observed in students that their studying capacity increases exponentially a day before exam because there is a given amount of time and the student have to finish the syllabus in that time only, If he/she has to pass. Same applies to People working online, If they set up a time limit and follow it strictly, It can do wonders to them. Both productivity and quality of the work will improve.
3.  Prioritize Your Work
Now that you have only work related websites open in your browser and you have also set up a time limit, here comes the most important part, Prioritizing the work, What is to be done first and what after that and so on.
Though, Priorities completely depends upon the the type of work you are in but It is always better to plan before you start working, Start with short term plans and than move on to long term plans.
For my kinda work, Prioritizing is very important because blogging is about doing several things simultaneously, It is not just writing posts, It is much more than that, believe me.  And If I don’t prioritize my activities, I may end up with a lot of work undone
For getting best work done in minimum possible time, Planning and Prioritizing activities are very important. They always lead to a better result than unplanned activities.
I hope you find this post useful. If you have something valuable to add, Do share in comments below the post.

Bal Thackeray to be cremated Sunday evening

The mortal remains of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray will be consigned to the flames Sunday evening at the crematorium beside Shivaji Park, revered as 'Shiv Tirth' by Shiv Sainiks in Maharashtra, a party official said.
"Thackeray's body is at present kept at Matoshri. Tomorrow morning, around 7.30 a.m., it will be taken to Shiv Sena Bhavan for party workers to pay their respects. From there, it will be taken to Shivaji Park where the public can pay their last respects from 10 a.m.," party MP Sanjay Raut told mediapersons Saturday evening.

Matoshri, the Thackeray residence, is in Bandra East in central Mumbai while Shivaji Park, a sprawling historic ground and cradle of Indian cricket, is in Dadar West, barely six km from Bandra.

Elaborate arrangements were being made by an army of workers at Shivaji Park for the sea of humanity expected Sunday, also a holiday.

Mumbai Police are also making fool-proof security arrangements in Bandra, along the entire route to Shiv Sena Bhavan, the party headquarters in Dadar West, and to the Shivaji Park.

Raut said public 'darshan' would be allowed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Shivaji Park. Later, the funeral will be held at crematorium nearby.

He again appealed to all grieving party activists to "maintain peace and remain calm" in the wake of the tragedy that has befallen the party and the Thackeray family.

Thackeray passed away at 3.33 pm Saturday after prolonged illness and battling for life the past one week.

Earlier, there were reports that Thackeray had actually passed away a few days ago, but top party leaders dismissed them as "false" and asserted that he was "very much in our midst" and fighting for life.

Know Balasaheb Thackeray and his family

Balasaheb Keshav Thackeray and his family

Bal Keshav Thackeray is known as a fiery right wing leader of Maharashtra. A cartoonist by profession, Thackeray formed ‘Shiv Sena’ that espoused the cause of Maratha interest and Marathi language.
After a long struggle, Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, in alliance with BJP, succeeded in snatching power from Congress in 1995. The Shiv Sena-BJP government ruled Maharashtra from 1995-99.
Bal Thackeray is one of those controversial politicians of India who is blamed for fanning communal and regional chauvinism in Maharashtra. But he is a force to reckon with in Maharashtra politics.

In his early days, Bal Thackeray targeted Gujaratis, Marwaris, and southern Indians in Mumbai for grabbing jobs and depriving native Mumbaikars of their livelihood.

After that he championed the cause of aggressive Hindutva and targeted Muslims for their alleged anti- Hindu mindset. Recently, his party targeted North Indians, especially those belonging to UP and Bihar, for infiltrating Mumbai and snatching jobs from the natives.

Bal thackeray’s nephew Raj Thackeray used to be his lieutenant not very long ago but he parted ways with Bal Thackeray when the senior Thackeray decided to anoint his son Uddhav as the second-in-command of Shiv Sena. Today, Raj is heading his own party – Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

Thackeray family has played an important in Maharashtra Politics right from the days of separate statehood movement.

For last few days, Bal Thackeray’s health has deteriorated and he was on oxygen support till the last report came in.

It’s time to take a look at the family background of Bal Thackeray who has dominated the politics of Mumbai for more than last two decades now.

Keshav Thackeray

The story of Thackerays began with the arrival of Keshav Sitaram Thackeray to Bombay. Keshav Sitaram Thackeray was also known as Prabodhankar Thackeray because of his articles in his fortnightly magazine named Prabodhan.

Keshav Thackeray

Keshav Thackeray was born in a lower-middle class Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu family .Keshav Thackeray had two sons – Bal Thackeray and Shrikant Thackeray.

Keshav Thackeray

Keshav was a social activist and a prolific writer. The British tolerated him because of his progressive ideas about the empowerment of women and his strident opposition to the caste system.

Referred to as the first family of Maharashtra politics, the Thackerays played a vital role in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement. Leading from the front was Keshav Thackeray, one of the five prominent leaders of the movement.

His sons Bal and Shrikant participated by contributing articles and cartoons to local publications.A prolific writer, Keshav penned plays, biographies and booklets to create awareness about the Maharashtra movement. He became actively involved with the movement in 1951. Supporting the demand to include Dang district in Maharashtra instead of Gujarat, he appealed for Dang Day to be observed on June 3, 1951.

Keshav used his diplomatic and persuasive skills in bringing together leaders of all political parties in the best interest of Maharashtra movement. Keshav brought all these leaders under one umbrella - Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti.

It was launched in 1955 to pursue the demand for the formation of Maharashtra, with Mumbai and Belgaum as parts of it. Keshav led from the front and was even arrested during this movement.

Bal Thackeray, at the time, worked as a cartoonist in the ‘Free Press Journal’.  He also contributed to Marathi publications, including Navyug, under the pseudonym Mavla. Bal Thackeray supported the demands made by the samiti and attacked the Congress through his cartoons.

Then chief minister Morarji Desai, Bombay Congress chief SK Patil and senior leader Yashwantrao Chavan were his pet targets. His focus shifted to Desai after 15 people were killed in the police firing on November 21, 1955, during a morcha at the Flora Fountain (now Hutatma Chowk). Balasaheb sketched Desai as a Nar Bhakshak (maneater) in his cartoon. The cartoon showed Desai sitting on a pile of human bodies, saying, “I am a pure vegetarian.” He also mocked Chavan’s statement that Nehru was bigger than Maharashtra.

Balasaheb’s younger brother Shrikant, too, drew cartoons for Navyug during the movement. Like his brother, Shrikant also targeted the Congress, especially Nehru and Desai.

Bal Thackeray lost his wife Meena to a heart attack in September 1996. His eldest son Bindumadhav died in a road accident on 20 April 1996.

His other son,Jaidev, had parted ways with Thackeray in 1995 over ideological differences when the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance  was in power. He has kept himself away from politics all these years. Jaidev divorced his wife Smitha Thackeray who is a renowned personality in Maharashtra and owns a TV production house.

Uddhav Thackeray, Bal Thackeray’s youngest son, is the executive president of Shiv Sena  and is slated to succeed Bal Thackeray as and when he calls it a day.

Bal Thackeray, Extremist Hindu Leader, Dies in Mumbai

Bal Thackeray, founder of the extremist Hindu group Shiv Sena

The founder of the extremist Hindu group Shiv Sena, Bal K. Thackeray, 86, died in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon, doctors who were treating him told reporters.
“He had suffered a cardiac arrest,” Dr. Jalil Parkar, told reporters after emerging from the Thackeray residence Saturday evening. “We could not revive him despite our best efforts,” he said. “He breathed his last at around 3.30 p.m.”
Mr. Thackeray, who was seriously ill for several weeks, was a divisive force in Indian politics who sometimes compared himself to Hitler and was often referred to as the “Tiger of Maharashtra.” Crowds gathered outside his home in recent days as news spread of his illness, and parts of Mumbai were virtually shut down late this week, awaiting his death.
Shiv Sena leaders appealed to his followers, who have erupted in violence before, for calm on Saturday evening. “Don’t crowd at Matoshree,” the group’s spokesman said, referring to Mr. Thackeray’s residence, according to Times Now. Businesses closed and evening cultural events were canceled across Mumbai as news of his death spread.
Mr. Thackeray’s funeral will be held tomorrow.

Service helps small businesses build visibility for marketing content

Summary : Outbrain's self-serve Amplify platform can help SMBs increase the amount of time that visitors spend on their Web sites for as little as $10 daily.
Small businesses with an active blogging campaign or lots of marketing brochures and white papers to promote might want to consider a new cloud service from New York-based Outbrain that can help boost the visibility of their content.
The Amplify service let companies submit their content (such as a blog entry or a case study) to contextually relevant premium publisher sites, where it appears as an editorial recommendation. The minimum campaign for these paid recommendations is $10 per day, according to information on the company's Web site.

The offering was born out of Outbrain's sophisticated content recommendation service — used by the likes of CNN, Fox News, Hearst and Rolling Stone magazine. These publishers use the engine to ensure that their content shows up on blogs or new sites that cover similar topics; or they cloud be used internally to help serve up additional articles on a site that might related to one that a visitor is reading. The recommendations are contextual, so that they relate to the original source of content.
"Businesses large and small understand the importance of content marketing - whether it's a Fortune 500 publishing a white paper, or a restaurant framing a great review from a local newspaper and hanging it in their window," said Yaron Galai, cofounder and CEO of Outbrain. "Outbrain Amplify enables marketers to realize the full value of their content by exposing it to captivate audiences on some of the top publishers in the world."
Amplify was beta-tested by a number of small companies, including Swanson Health Products, which sells discount vitamins, supplements and herbs.
The service helped increase the amount of time visitors spent on the Swanson Health blog by up to 24%, while almost doubling the number of referrals to new visitors, according to an Outbrain case study.

‘Halo 4′ Heralds a Dark New Chapter for Master Chief

343 Industries had a big job. It had to take Microsoft’s flagship Xbox franchise, which has sold 43 million copies across all games, and put its own stamp on it. Their developers had to keep fans happy, but also stay ahead of other great shooters. The studio had to prove to critics it could carry the mantle passed on from Halo‘s previous developer, Bungie.
Thankfully, Halo 4 is just that good.
Halo 4 is a tight, competent shooter, but it doesn’t rest easily on its laurels. The game and its developers put in so much effort to prove Halo wasn’t just Bungie’s domain. Halo 4 pushes the envelope in both its presentation and content without losing anything important to the franchise.

New Adventures, Old Chief

343i has said that its biggest investment in making Halo 4 its own was creating a more immersive story. Players first saw glimpses of this deeper story in Forward Unto Dawn, the live-action miniseries shown exclusively on YouTube that cost Microsoft $10 million to make. It gives you glimpses of young cadet Thomas Lasky, in a UNSC military academy, about 15 years before you see him Halo 4.
Halo 4 starts four years after the end of Halo 3. Master Chief and Cortana have been floating in the ship Forward Unto Dawn, both suspended until they are found or needed. The world has continued without them, and the passage of time isn’t always kind.
The biggest story changes players will immediately notice is that the stoic Master Chief has gotten a little more chatty. It might be jarring to players who are attached to the silent protagonist, whose lack of personality was purposeful in previous games. Chief’s role has moved from quiet killing machine to integral plot point, especially with the degradation of his AI counterpart, Cortana.

Cortana’s dialogue traditionally led Halo‘s narrative, but in the fourth installment, she develops signs of “rampancy” — a terminal state for AI constructs that makes her prone to outbursts and poor decision making. She will eventually “think herself to death” if a cure isn’t found. Chief’s concern and care when these moments happen is almost tender; their bond is clearly the deepest and most important to the story, and will be to players who have followed the series.
Master Chief’s age and purpose also come into focus here. His design, his humanity and his usefulness to the UNSC are often questioned. It becomes a thought-provoking point, and many game moments strive to point out his duality as hardware and flesh. It’s a darker trilogy that Master Chief has woken up in (Halo 4 is the first of three new games), and 343 doesn’t let the player forget it.
If that isn’t enough to digest, you are stranded on an unknown planet fighting both the Covenant, an enemy familiar to every Halo player, and new adversaries known as the Prometheans. If killing Grunts and Elites feels like second nature, players will be excited by the challenge the Prometheans can bring in battle. Enemies can teleport and even heal, and airborne aliens offer shield protection to the ground troops. Also, the weapons they drop are some of the most fun to use in the game, and have extra flair with creative reload animations.
The Halo universe has deep lore, more of it found in the nine novels than the games themselves. Casual players may find some of the cutscene references a little obscure, and may end up running to Wikipedia for backstory. This isn’t a complete weakness, but it’s worth noting in terms of accessibility to new fans or those who have only dabbled in Halo. Hardcore fans will get the most reward, but this story will hopefully inspire new players to dig deeper into the Halo universe.
There is so much more to the story of Halo 4, but we’ve tried to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible. A new foe and an ancient artifact are just some of the surprises in store for players.

If it Ain’t Broke…

If you’re likely to cry, “Hey, there is too much story in my Halos!”, don’t worry. One of the things Halo has always excelled at is combat. Thankfully, picking up the controller feels just like spending time with an old friend. The weapons perform the same as previous games, and the new ones add enough pizazz to keep combat fresh.
The mission objectives keep the game exciting. There are plenty of times you have to fight through waves of enemies, but they are often bookends to fun vehicle sequences in a variety of Halo‘s coolest rides. Nothing ever drags on for too long, which can be a common problem for many shooters.
The beautiful game setting also adds so much to your battles. One of the most enjoyable moments I experienced was fighting a wave of Covenant in a cave, and as I pushed forward, I was greeted with beautiful shafts of sunlight that looked almost real. Despite the aging Xbox 360 hardware, the game looks great. This makes it a bigger shame that Microsoft has stopped porting the Halo series to PC, because newer hardware would probably dazzle even more. Hopefully Halo 5 will coincide with the release of Microsoft’s next generation console, whenever that is.
It’s a good thing 343 had so much to prove, because it really stepped up to the plate for Halo 4. Old fans can trust the developers to handle their beloved series, and hopefully use its polish to bring new people into the fold.
Did you pick up Halo 4 at midnight? Let us know what you think of the game so far in the comments.
