Deathbed theory dreamt by an Indian maths genius is finally proved correct - almost 100 years after he died

  • Theory came to Srinivasa Ramanujan in a dream on his deathbed in 1920 - but has never been proved
  • Discovery could now be used to explain the behaviour of parts of a black hole

Srinivasa Ramanujan, described as a 'natural genius', has finally had the mathematical functions he came up with on his deathbed proved correct
Researchers have finally solved the cryptic deathbed puzzle renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan claimed came to him in dreams.
While on his death-bed in 1920, Ramanujan wrote a letter to his mentor, English mathematician G. H. Hardy, outlining several new mathematical functions never before heard of, along with a hunch about how they worked,
Decades years later, researchers say they've proved he was right - and that the formula could explain the behaviour of black holes.
'We've solved the problems from his last mysterious letters,' Emory University mathematician Ken Ono said.
'For people who work in this area of math, the problem has been open for 90 years,'
Ramanujan, a self-taught mathematician born in a rural village in South India, spent so much time thinking about math that he flunked out of college in India twice, Ono said.
Ramanujan's letter described several new functions that behaved differently from known theta functions, or modular forms, and yet closely mimicked them.
Functions are equations that can be drawn as graphs on an axis, like a sine wave, and produce an output when computed for any chosen input or value.
Ramanujan conjectured that his mock modular forms corresponded to the ordinary modular forms earlier identified by Carl Jacobi, and that both would wind up with similar outputs for roots of 1.
Ramanujan, a devout Hindu, thought these patterns were revealed to him by the goddess Namagiri.

Ramanujan claimed the patterns in numbers were revealed to him by a Hindu goddess

However, no one at the time understood what Ramanujan was talking about.
'It wasn’t until 2002, through the work of Sander Zwegers, that we had a description of the functions that Ramanujan was writing about in 1920,' Ono said.

Ono and his colleagues drew on modern mathematical tools that had not been developed before Ramanujan’s death to prove this theory was correct.
'We proved that Ramanujan was right,' Ono says.
'We found the formula explaining one of the visions that he believed came from his goddess.'
The team were also stunned to find the function could be used today.
'No one was talking about black holes back in the 1920s when Ramanujan first came up with mock modular forms, and yet, his work may unlock secrets about them,' Ono says.

A highlight of working on a film about Ramanujan's life was getting to browse through some of the Indian master's original notebooks, said Ken Ono, right

'Ramanujan's legacy, it turns out, is much more important than anything anyone would have guessed when Ramanujan died,' Ono said.
The findings were presented last month at the Ramanujan 125 conference at the University of Florida, ahead of the 125th anniversary of the mathematician's birth on Dec. 22nd.

A NATURAL GENIUS

December 22, 2012 marks the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the self taught mathematician born into a modest and conservative family in Kumbakonam, a relatively small town in Tamilnad.

'Raw genius' Ramanujan at Cambridge (centre)

Ramanujan was self-taught and worked in almost complete isolation from the mathematical community of his time.
Described as a raw genius, he independently rediscovered many existing results, as well as making his own unique contributions, believing his inspiration came from the Hindu goddess Namagiri.
He spent so much time thinking about math that he flunked out of college in India twice.
He overcame several hurdles to find a place among the celebrated intellectuals of Cambridge.
Ramanujan passed away at the young age of 32 of tuberculosis, but he left behind formulations in mathematics that have paved the path for many scholars who came after him.

Stuff That Matters

This post is for people who work online all day, It becomes difficult for them to concentrate on stuff that matters because distractions for them are only ‘a new tab’away.
I don’t know how most people work but when I write a post for my blog I keep all my social media profiles, email account and reference links open in other tabs and as a result I get distracted many times hence I end up with either a incomplete write up or no write up at all.
I wasn’t worried about all this until last week when a friend of mine asked me how many hours do you work? This question proved to be a difficult one for me because i don’t really know how many hours i work. Though, I sit in front of computer for at-least 3 hours everyday but out of all that time, how many hours do i really work? I have no idea, because all my Internet activities (working, tweeting, replying emails, etc) are simultaneously happening.
It’s high time for me to get organised and you as well, If you also work the same way as i do.
I have got few points which I am going to raise in this post, which might help in getting better productivity at work and If you have something to add, Feel free to share in the comments,

1.  Do One Thing At A Time, Focus
The moment I come online, first thing i do is opening my favorite social Media website, which in my case is Quora and than i go through other social media profiles , check emails and finally i come to the business.
I guess everyone follows the exact same order and there is nothing wrong with that too but keep checking Tweets, Facebook and emails simultaneously while working hampers the efficiency a lot. If you don’t believe me read this,
Recently, A guy named Maneesh Sethi hired a girl from craigslist to slap him every-time he got on Facebook while working and this worked well for him, his productivity went from 35-40% to 98%.
Don’t keep checking what your friends are doing while working, your friends can wait but work can’t.
2.  Set A Time Limit
I never really cared how much time it takes for me to write a post, may be because i am writing for my own blog but this is wrong and should not happen. You must know how much work you can do in a given amount of time because there’s a beautiful quote which goes like this, ”Time is Money”. So, Use Your Time Wisely.
Here’s an example,a simple analogy,
It is always observed in students that their studying capacity increases exponentially a day before exam because there is a given amount of time and the student have to finish the syllabus in that time only, If he/she has to pass. Same applies to People working online, If they set up a time limit and follow it strictly, It can do wonders to them. Both productivity and quality of the work will improve.
3.  Prioritize Your Work
Now that you have only work related websites open in your browser and you have also set up a time limit, here comes the most important part, Prioritizing the work, What is to be done first and what after that and so on.
Though, Priorities completely depends upon the the type of work you are in but It is always better to plan before you start working, Start with short term plans and than move on to long term plans.
For my kinda work, Prioritizing is very important because blogging is about doing several things simultaneously, It is not just writing posts, It is much more than that, believe me.  And If I don’t prioritize my activities, I may end up with a lot of work undone
For getting best work done in minimum possible time, Planning and Prioritizing activities are very important. They always lead to a better result than unplanned activities.
I hope you find this post useful. If you have something valuable to add, Do share in comments below the post.

Label Cords At Both Ends for Maximum Organization

If writing about technology has taught me anything, it's that products and processes can always be improved. No matter how smart an idea seems, there's a good chance it'll get blown out of the water by something new later down the line. And it doesn't just apply to the high-tech world. Your little efficient household habits can always stand an improvement. Like this: You might find your cable jungle gets easier to navigate if you label each cord not once, but twice.

While you might know which plug in the power strip belongs to the BluRay player you're loaning to a friend (you know, because you were smart and labeled it "BluRay"), it's still almost impossible to guess which one of the HDMI cords plugged into your TV belongs to that same BluRay player.
Unless, of course, you were smart and labeled both ends!
An article in our hometown newspaper about getting your home office wired for success led us to this gem of a tip:
"First, we will put a label at both ends of every wire and cable... On one end it might say: ROUTER. On the other end of the same cable: BILL'S COMPUTER. Make the same kind of labels for every wire and cable. You'll end up with labels like: iPHONE CHARGER, SPEAKER POWER, TO MODEM, FROM MODEM. You get the idea."
It's a brillant way to keep your cords in order. Plus it becomes extra useful when you're getting ready to unplug everything and cord-wrangle from scratch, like the article's author.
Need creative cord labels? Try bread tags, like in the photos in this post, or any one of the otheR

6 Tips to Help Ignite Your Creativity and Increase Your Success

When it comes to achieving success on the Internet or anything in life for that matter, it probably isn’t a secret that having some capacity of creative spark or talent can increase your chances of attaining your goals.
But what makes some people more creative and successful than others? Is creativity something genetic and does that mean those who aren’t blessed with this gene are doomed to never be creative or successful?
Well the simple answer is that creativity is something which we are ALL born with but some people lose it more than others as they grow older. If you observe young children playing you’ll know what I mean when I say we all start with a propensity for some kind of creativity which is usually fueled by curiosity.
Many people lack a creative spark because they stopped doing the simple things which leads to creative ideas in the first place.
Most people, as they grow older start to develop bad habits or a limited mindset maybe because they are in a job they don’t like or a difficult financial situation. As time goes by, the curiosity they had when they were children diminishes and with that so does creativity.
Instead of using their curiosity and creativity to investigate ways to improve their lives these people give up trying but they also wish things could be different.
A lot of people also believe that to achieve true financial or other success you need to invest a lot of money in the first place or have to go to a top university so that you get the right job in the right company.
The reality is, that at this point in time in the evolutionary scale of technology, everything you need to make you successful is readily available at your finger tips from the Internet in the comfort of your own home. We can even go so far as to say that the Internet is the new “UniversityofSuccess”.
A little over a decade ago you could be excused for believing that you needed to attend some sort of college or university to learn the necessary skills to help you succeed, but now that’s not true anymore.
For a fraction of the cost of a regular university or college course, now you can teach yourself a new skill or get full guidance and coaching online without having to leave your home.
All that is needed on your part initially is some curiosity and action to get you started.
The list of 6 pointers below which I’ve compiled from various successful people will help ignite your creativity and re-charge your motivation:
  1. Try something new for 30 days
This is a great suggestion which I recently heard in a presentation from Matt Cutts who is a search optimization engineer at google. Trying something new for a month is a fantastic way to re-build your creativity and whet your curiosity. This can also help you discover the thing that you love doing in case you weren’t sure what it was to begin with.
In terms of the Internet there are countless of free and premium courses and products available in which you can learn or discover a new skill which you can use to enhance your creativity.
  2. Do what you love
People who make a living from doing what they love instantly have a head-start on those who hate or are indifferent to their jobs. Apart from the fact that you feel good doing what you love, you also have no negative baggage which comes from the stress and resentment of doing something you don’t like.
If you don’t know what you love doing, then maybe applying point 1 above might help you.
  3. Keep your goals to yourself – at least in the beginning
Sometimes when you decide to muster up the courage to try something new it’s a good idea to keep your goals a secret initially. This may sound counter-intuitive because most people think that by making their intentions known they can increase their visibility and hence their chances of success because somebody out there might offer some help. Well that’s true to an extent but in a lot of cases the people you might be sharing your goals with might not have the same enthusiasm and mindset as you, and quite often they will try to talk you out of your “crazy ideas” and tell you that it’s just too hard.
Therefore, unless you’re certain that you are talking to people with a similar attitude as yours, hold on to your goals and plans until you’ve put them into practice.
  4. Be curious
When you start digging deeper into something out of curiosity, you usually find that not only do you enhance your knowledge about that thing, but sometimes you might come up with creative ideas which you would never have thought of if you hadn’t indulged your curiosity.
So next time you are reading or watching a tutorial about how to do something for your blog, why not delve deeper and experiment with what you’ve learnt and see what happens.
  5. Improve
Improving yourself both in terms of knowledge and in general can only serve to benefit you and those around you. Most of us are increasingly becoming aware of the huge economic changes sweeping the world’s societies in terms of employment and what it means to be financially secure. Having a regular job for 20, 30 or 50 years until you retire is a thing of the past. The new reality is that people who can re-skill quickly and who regularly add to their existing skills will be better off in today’s economic climate.
  6. Focus
The ability to focus determines the outcome of the task you are trying to accomplish. Therefore whenever you set yourself a task, see it through to completion by doing regular highly focused little chunks at a time. Doing small manageable chunks can make the highest mountain seems like a mole hill.
Creativity and success are not just something necessarily reserved for a special few and now with information and knowledge so readily accessible from the Internet, cultivating your creativity has never been so easy. Therefore applying some of the ingredients above to your life will go a long way in maximizing your chances of reaching your goals.

Why Can't We Sneeze With Our Eyes Open?

It's true that we can't sneeze with our eyes open, because the action of closing eyes and sneezing is automatic. But, did you know, (achoo!! excuse me) that some people can actually train themselves to sneeze with their eyes open?

Sneezing is good for us. It aids in getting rid of germs and other foreign particles out of the body. When something tickles in the nose, or if you have a cold or a dust particle stuck in the nose; then the body's natural response is to sneeze. However, one thing that seems impossible while sneezing is - to keep the eyes open. Yep, we can't sneeze with our eyes open. Here's more on this ordinary phenomenon
The Science of Sneezing

As already mentioned, sneezing is an automatic action. It is a reflex. The medical term for sneezing is sternutation, which means the act of involuntary expulsion of air from the nose.

Call it an involuntary or automatic action, reflex, natural response, the fact remains that it is next to impossible to keep your eyes open while sneezing! As you can't control air escaping out of your nose during a sneeze, you will not able to control the motion of your eyes too. The muscles of the eyes act automatically when the action of sneezing occurs. The whole action of sneezing is quite a complex process; when the inside wall of your nose gets tickled, a message is sent to the sneeze center inside your brain. This center sends a message to the muscles of chest, diaphragm, stomach, back of the throat and the eyelids. All these muscles work in tandem to sneeze out the irritants.

Therefore, not only the eyelids, but also chest or stomach muscles are beyond your control during a sneezing action. On the other hand, there have been some instances where people have managed to sneeze while keeping their eyes open. Weird, huh
?

Yes, some rare individuals can sneeze with their eyes open. However, it is not natural. These people train themselves to sneeze while keeping the eyelids open with their fingers. Ouch! Sounds painful... You can check out several videos of this body trick on the Internet.

Here are two myths related to sneezing which are now debunked.

Myth #1: Your eyes will pop out, if you do not close them while sneezing.
Myth#2: The germs or irritants that are expelled during a sneeze can go right back into your eyes, if you do not keep them closed.

Interesting Facts About Sneezing

  • The fastest sneeze recorded is 103.6 mph (167 km/h)!
  • Did you know that there are people who sneeze when they are exposed to sunlight? They are called photic sneezers. It seems this condition runs in the family.
  • Plucking hair from your eyebrow can make you sneeze
  • Iguanas sneeze more often than other animals. They sneeze to get rid of salts which are formed during digestion.
  • Did you know that Donna Griffiths from England has the longest sneezing attack of 978 days?

Body Tricks That are Impossible to Do

  • Just as you can't keep your eyes open while sneezing, there are certain body tricks that you will find are beyond the bounds of your ability.
  • You can't lick your elbow.
  • You can't tickle yourself.
  • Everybody's seen Samantha twitch her nose in Bewitched, but the trick is impossible to do, at least by a human.
  • You can't lick your nose or chin.
  • Here is something you can try. Sit on a chair and start making clockwise circle with your right foot on the floor. Then, with your right hand's index finger try to draw '6'. Impossible, isn't it?

Though, the aforementioned tricks are impossible to perform for an average individual, a few people can do them with considerable ease. Just like most of us can't really put our whole fist in the mouth, but some people gifted with small hands and big mouth, can accomplish this feat.

Scientists still can't explain why we can't keep our eyes wide open while sneezing. Hence, it is reasoned out that it is the body's natural response to keep the eyes closed while sneezing. Anyway, next time you sneeze, bless you!
